Trauma-Informed Care in Pennsylvania

Addressing All Aspects of Addiction Treatment & Recovery

At Silvermist, we are aware of the trauma often experienced by individuals with severe substance use disorders (SUD). Current research is uncovering the link between trauma and addiction. By some estimates, over two-thirds of people seeking treatment for addiction report one or more traumatic life experiences. Our staff validate these traumatic experiences and offer a safe and supportive environment to begin the process of healing.

Trauma-informed care lets our addiction therapists identify a client’s current situation and actions as they relate to past events and allows us to see the potential for recovery. Trauma-informed care allows us to recognize substance abuse as a learned mechanism for survival. Changing thoughts on the behavior allows the client to make positive changes, rather than focusing on the symptoms of the trauma, like substance abuse.

Treatment for Trauma

To help our clients find lasting sobriety, Silvermist provides a trauma-informed approach to treatment. All staff members and addiction therapists participate in regular supervision and training specifically to discuss how to respond appropriately to symptoms of trauma.

We believe that certain behaviors are symptoms of trauma. That’s why it’s very important to respond in a manner that will not only prevent more trauma but will also help to ensure that you feel safe, empowered, and supported.

How Our Addiction Therapists Treat Trauma

The clinicians at Silvermist utilize trauma-specific interventions to address the complexities and delicate nature of addiction with underlying trauma. These models of care are evidence-based in helping clients overcome trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, particularly when combined with substance abuse.

These therapies generally focus on finding emotional safety, learning effective coping skills and bringing one’s attention to the present moment:
