More than half of people living in the United States will be diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder during their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). There is no single cause for developing a mental health condition. Factors that can contribute to increased risk for mental health disorders include:

  • Early adverse life experiences or trauma, such as child abuse, sexual assault or witnessing violence

  • Other chronic medical conditions, such as cancer or diabetes
  • Biological factors or chemical imbalances in the brain
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Loneliness or isolation

Fortunately, with professional treatment and ongoing support, it’s possible to recover, manage your mental health and not only function in your daily life, but thrive.

Silvermist’s primary psychiatric program offers comprehensive mental health treatment to adult males of all ages struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, mood disorders, eating disorders and co-occurring substance use.

Our trauma-focused residential treatment program, located on a serene, private campus in southwestern Pennsylvania, focuses on the whole person rather than addressing one specific issue or behavior. By focusing on increasing psychological flexibility, reflection and resilience, clients can achieve symptom reduction, behavior modification, improved functioning and increased overall well-being.

Signs you may need mental health treatment

It’s possible to experience poor mental health and not be diagnosed with a mental illness. Additionally, an individual who has been diagnosed with a mental health condition can experience periods of physical, mental and social well-being. Not sure if a residential mental health treatment program is right for you or your loved one? Here are examples of behaviors that may indicate the need for residential mental health treatment:

  • Chronically missing work
  • Interpersonal distress
  • Lack of energy, inability to complete daily responsibilities
  • Isolation; unwillingness or inability to engage with peer and family in a meaningful way
  • Impulsivity
  • Risky behavior
  • Substance abuse

  • Inability or unwillingness to engage in hobbies or extracurricular activities
  • Engaging in disordered eating behaviors such as restricting food intake, purging or binge eating
  • Self-harm
  • Volatility
  • Hostility
  • Inability to follow through with commitments

If you or a loved one is struggling with functioning in daily life due to a mental health condition, help is available. With effective treatment and support, it’s possible to achieve a better quality of life.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Silvermist’s Primary Psychiatric Program utilizes acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), an evidence-based, trauma-focused treatment approach focused on increasing psychological flexibility.

Through ACT, clients learn to stop avoiding or denying their inner emotions. Instead, they learn to accept that these deep feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that do not need to prevent them from moving forward in their lives. With this understanding, clients can begin to accept their struggles and commit to making necessary behavioral changes, regardless of what’s going on in their lives and how they feel about these situations.

Treatment tailored to your age and life stage

While mental health disorders can affect people of any age, adults tend to face different challenges, stressors and obstacles as they age and progress through life. At Silvermist, our programming takes into account the unique developmental features of both young adulthood and middle age and their effects on clients’ mental health. Intentionally designing treatment services with these features in mind can be beneficial for clients’ recovery and personal growth.

Mental health treatment for young adult males

Our program for young adult males aged 18 to 35 years includes curriculum focused on creativity, increased consciousness and sense of self, emotional intensity and the heightened need for social engagement.

Mental health treatment for midlife adult males

For clients over 35, our treatment curriculum focuses on the reappraisal or revaluation of one’s life as they age. This process is vital to successful progression through the midlife stage. In addition, our program aims to make middle aged clients aware of the impact of emotional ups and downs or “peaks and valleys” of midlife adulthood on their daily functioning.

Collaborative mental health treatment

At Silvermist, collaborative relationships between staff, clients and families help foster intrinsic change, behavioral shifts and therapeutic progress.

At the beginning of treatment, the care team surveys clients and families about their expectations. Within the first days of admission, clients receive a psychiatric evaluation, clinical assessments and nutritional assessment (if needed) so that the treatment team understands the full scope of their needs. Early in the process, the treatment team works to establish a connection with each client in order to increase their sense of safety and willingness to be vulnerable throughout the treatment process.

Mental health treatment modalities

Silvermist’s primary psychiatric program provides a small treatment setting that emphasizes individualization of treatment plans. Our licensed professionals are able to spend ample time with each individual client and their families to best understand their unique needs, experiences and expectations for treatment.

We believe that offering a diverse range of treatment interventions is the most effective approach to behavioral healthcare. This gives clients the opportunity to learn, experience and absorb new insights in a comprehensive way that provides increased opportunity for long-term success after treatment. The context of each client’s history is considered with each treatment decision and intervention.

At Silvermist, our trauma-focused, clinically integrated, evidence-based programming consists of the following:

  • Daily psychoeducational groups
  • Daily psychotherapeutic process groups
  • Weekly nutritional support, if needed
  • Weekly individual therapy sessions
  • Weekly family therapy sessions
  • Weekly medication management and nursing consultations
  • Daily experimental and holistic groups (ecotherapy, music therapy, trauma-sensitive yoga, mindfulness/meditation, art therapy and reiki)

After treatment is completed, we help clients plan their next steps and stay connected through the Silvermist Alumni Association, a recovery community that encourages alumni to lead a self-directed lifestyle and supports them to strive to reach their full potential.
