Rather than reintroducing people fresh in recovery to stressors such as finding housing, searching for a job, and building new social supports, Silvermist strives to expose clients to these situations and teach them how to deal with them in a safe and supportive environment before they ever leave the property.
Our clients attend hour-long life skills classes once a week. These classes are taught by our licensed counselors who share appropriate coping methods with our clients. In addition to re-teaching clients how to deal with life’s stressors and become independent, life skills classes can improve an individual’s self-esteem and confidence in their recovery.
Common topics addressed in life skills class include:
- Finding a job
- Controlling emotions and coping with stress
- Developing healthy relationships with others
- Managing hygiene and nutrition
- Budgeting and securing financial independence
Life skills focus on both short- and long-term goals, with a real focus on building personal responsibility and accountability. By addressing these issues with clients who are still in treatment, Silvermist hopes to improve their chances of maintaining a sober and healthy lifestyle over time.
