Do Things That Engage Your Mind
Simply put, when your mind is focused on other activities, you’re less likely to think about turning to drugs or alcohol. For this reason, find activities that challenge your mind and put your brain to the test. This can include puzzles, word searches, learning a new language, or even reading a book.
Take Up a New Hobby
Essentially, everyone has a hobby or activity that they’ve always wanted to try but haven’t for one reason or another. Take time to consider what interests you and deflect feelings of boredom with that new hobby. Perhaps you want to take up painting, try your hand at baking, or test your green thumb by gardening.
Focus on the Feeling After the Task
Sometimes, you simply can’t find the motivation to do a certain task — for instance, exercising. Rather than finding the motivation for the actual workout, remind yourself of how good you feel after the task is completed. That can help get you up and moving.
