The question, “What are the goals of addiction treatment?” might seem like a bit of a no-brainer. Obviously, the goal of an addiction treatment program is to get sober, right?

Right.

But, addiction treatment dives so much deeper than “helping people get sober.” Rehab and substance use treatment helps to heal the person from the inside out in order to ensure long-lasting recovery and prevent relapse from occurring.

Substance abuse treatment goals

A good rehab facility will have goals in mind that they want their clients to achieve at each stage of the recovery process, but will also encourage their clients to set goals for themselves as well. When you set your own recovery goals, you’re not only more likely to remain motivated throughout the duration of treatment, you’ll be able to personalize your treatment plan to meet the needs you want to address the most.

Substance abuse treatment plan goals of the facility

Generally speaking, a solid treatment program for addiction falls into three phases: detox, inpatient or residential treatment and outpatient care. Each of these stages has their own set of goals in place to help you reach full recovery.

  • Detox – The goal of detox is to physically prepare your body for recovery. Detoxing helps to rid your body of any and all toxins which might be in your system from substance use. By cleansing your body and overcoming the withdrawal symptoms during detox, you can better prepare yourself for the next stage of recovery.
  • Residential/Inpatient treatment – Whereas detox is all about recovering your body, rehab and mental health counseling is all about recovering your mind. The way that substance use rewires your brain is severe, and often cannot be undone without the guidance of a therapist. Rehab helps to address underlying mental health conditions that may have caused or developed because of a substance use disorder.
  • Outpatient treatment – The goal of outpatient treatment is to provide you with a much less supervised recovery plan where you take primary responsibility for life outside of a treatment facility. Outpatient care provides meetings and support groups that help you maintain sobriety longterm and make recovery a lifestyle.

In addition to the individual goals of the recovery stages, each treatment facility has their own recovery goals and mission to help individuals heal and recover from addiction. These may include:

  • Increasing awareness of addiction, and educating those who seek addiction help so they don’t feel so controlled by the disorder
  • Educating both clients and their families about the topic of addiction to decrease myths and increase the numbers of those who seek addiction treatment (as many who struggle with addiction never seek formal treatment)
  • Helping clients identify their triggers and formulate healthy coping mechanisms in order to maintain sobriety and prevent relapse
  • Removing them from an environment where they have access to illicit substances via a sober living home or inpatient treatment facility

And while each treatment facility has overall goals for their clients, the best treatment facilities encourage the development of individual goals to make treatment personalized and recovery more sustainable.

Example treatment plan goals of your own

When you enter an addiction recovery program, you’re likely to have a number of goals in mind that you want to meet. Your therapist will help you hone these goals and come up with strategies by which to meet them. A number of common goals clients want to get out of treatment include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Finding a safe place to live during the duration of treatment
  • Learning more about addiction in order to better address it
  • Developing better methods of coping
  • Addressing experiences, trauma or other mental health concerns which may have instigated a substance use disorder
  • Becoming part of a community of people with whom you can journey through recovery and find continual support in
  • Creating better habits of self-control, impulsivity awareness and any other habits that help regulate unhealthy coping mechanisms

Needless to say, you probably have your own personal goals for entering addiction treatment, even if it’s as simple as desiring a better life for yourself. With the right treatment program, you can reach all your goals and find freedom from substance use.
